Perinatal substance use disorders are a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. Many CNMs and CMs will provide care for people in the perinatal period who have current substance use disorders or histories of substance use disorders. This webinar, first in a series, will provide a general overview of perinatal substance use disorders, how to identify a person who has a substance use disorder, and why identifying and treating perinatal substance use disorders with kindness, compassion, and autonomy is fundamental to changing the tide and enhancing outcomes for this vulnerable population.

3. Outline perinatal SUD screening recommendations during pregnancy and postpartum

Meagan Thompson

Meagan Thompson, DNP, APRN, CNM, Co-PI, has a BA in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin Madison is Sociology, with minors in American Indian Studies and Women’s Studies. She worked as a reproductive health educator before returning for her Masters of Nursing (MN) at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. After receiving her MN degree, Meagan worked as a RN on a high-acuity tertiary care labor and delivery unit. While working as a bedside nurse, Meagan pursued her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in the Nurse-Midwifery specialty. During her DNP program, Meagan participated in the Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH) fellowship where she worked as part of an interdisciplinary cohort to learn the basics of research, grant writing, and inter-professional collaboration. Her fellowship project examined reproductive outcomes for incarcerated adolescents.

Meagan worked as a full-scope CNM at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (UIHC) from 2019-2022. During her time at UIHC, Meagan was a Co-PI for a grant that allowed her to implement universal drug screening for all pregnant people. This grant also allowed her the opportunity to create the Maternal Substance Use Disorder (MSUD) clinic. The MSUD clinic is an innovative, holistic, wrap-around perinatal substance use program that worked closely with addiction medicine to address the unique needs of perinatal people with SUD.

In August of 2022, Meagan completed a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner certificate, making her uniquely qualified to care for perinatal people with substance use and mood disorders.
