Congratulations to ACNM President Dr. Susan Stone, DNSc, CNM, FACNM, FAAN who was one of only two nurses inducted into the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Class of 2018 at NAM’s annual meeting on October 19, 2019 in Washington, DC. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. 

Dr. Stone is a proven leader in the development of strategies that have helped increase the quality of midwifery and nurse practitioner care, as well as the capacity of the nursing and midwifery workforce, all with the specific goal of improving health care for families. Dr. Stone has been the President of Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Ky for the past two decades, where she transitioned a community-based school of nurse-midwifery, offering a basic certificate program, to an accredited university offering masters and doctoral degrees for nurses who are seeking graduate degrees. For the past year she has also served as ACNM President where she further supports her above goal by advocating for the decrease in maternal mortality and morbidity and promotes the need to increase the diversity and collaboration of all providers in the healthcare setting. Her agenda of these items has brought about positive changes for midwives, nurses and families nationwide. 

New members are elected by current members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of medical sciences, health care, and public health. Dr. Stone was chosen as a member of NAM’s Class of 2018 due to her multitude of achievements, including her work in opening the door to more than 6,000 nurses and midwives who were able to obtain graduate nursing education enabling the majority to provide accessibility to quality health care for rural and underserved families across the United States.
