Basic Suturing Skills for Midwives
This is a hands-on workshop designed for new graduates or seasoned CNMs/CMs needing to brush up on suturing skills. During the workshop, maintenance of privacy, perineal anatomy, indications for perineal repair, administration of local anesthesia, repair of 1st and 2nd-degree perineal lacerations, and post-repair assessment will be discussed, demonstrated, and practiced. Skills to be taught and practiced include one-handed knot tying, instrument tie, repair of second-degree perineal laceration/episiotomy, and first-degree labial laceration utilizing the most recent evidence.
INSTRUCTORS
Tanya Belcheff, DNP, CNM is an Assistant Professor for the Midwifery and Women's health programs at Frontier Nursing University. She has worked in birth centers and teaching hospitals as a full-scope midwife. She also has experience in administration and providing group care in the birth center setting. Tanya is passionate about elevating the status of families by increasing access to care, and providing innovative, inclusive, quality, client-centered care. She is a member of ACNM and AABC.
Dorsena Gayle, DNP, CNM is the Clinical Transition Coordinator for the Midwifery and Women's health programs at Frontier Nursing University. She has worked in birth centers, collaborative practices, as a hospitalist and teaching hospitals as a full-scope midwife. She also has experience in administration and providing group care in the birth center setting. Dorsena is passionate about decreasing healthcare disparities directly related to weathering and providing innovative, inclusive, quality, client-centered care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At completion of this workshop the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the optimal sutures, needles, used for wound closure of birth-related tissue trauma
2. Identify the types of lacerations and risk factors associated with lacerations
3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to perform effective knot-tying and suturing
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and techniques postpartum assessment for tissue trauma
5. Describe and demonstrate techniques for evaluating and approximating tissue trauma following childbirth
6. Describe and demonstrate techniques for local analgesia infiltration
7. Describe and demonstrate techniques for episiotomy
