Thanks to a special slate of guest bloggers at Midwife Connection, thousands of people were exposed to the midwifery perspective on a variety of issues during National Midwifery Week 2009. We posted informative articles on:
• the H1N1 vaccine (by ACNM Senior Practice Advisor Eileen Beard, CNM),
• discussions about midwifery and gender - personal reflections and experiences on being a man in a female-dominated profession (Peter Johnson, CNM, director of global learning at Jhpiego),
• what it means to practice "real" midwifery (Quickening's "Midwife to Midwife" columnist Leslie Ludka),
• Georgetown University students revealed why they decided to become a midwife,
• and even one client's account of how her midwives' care was a gift at a time when she needed it the most.
The guest bloggers also reached fans on the ACNM Facebook page, where their blogs were reposted and stimulated even more conversation. RHRealityCheck.org also spread the word by re-publishing several of the posts. The online event was certainly a success that the ACNM national office staff plans to continue this year.
Andrea M. Donmyer, CNM used the Ambassador Toolkit to pitch a news story to local media in her area. She also set up a display table with midwifery information and a car seat giveaway at a community vaccination clinic, where she reached more than 400 people in one day!
