Team Midwife: Catch the Spirit

by Cassie Moore, Writer and Editor, American College of Nurse-Midwives

Ever feel like some people just don’t “get” midwifery? Sure, your clients love you and, if you’re lucky, the nurses and doctors you work with understand your profession, but we all know there are those who think that midwives only attend all-natural home births. Some people think doulas and midwives are the same thing. Some believe midwives receive no formal education and training. And even people who are relatively informed about midwifery might not know that midwives can write prescriptions or perform primary care.

At ACNM, we know how frustrating it can be to run up against these misconceptions. That’s why we’ve launched Team Midwife, a campaign that recruits midwifery fans—including consumers, legislators, health care professionals, and even your friends and family—to address the misunderstandings that have endured for decades, and, to this day, prevent women from knowing about and thus accessing midwifery care.

What is Team Midwife?
Largely powered by social media, Team Midwife is a campaign that asks the public to raise awareness of midwifery with two options for getting involved.

Join the Team

We’re recruiting your supporters—consumers, health professionals, and legislators—to join Team Midwife. Official Team Midwife membership is just $15 and helps support ACNM in our mission to improve awareness and access to midwives. (Read more about the campaign and ACNM’s strategic goals at www.teammidwife.org.) Team members also receive extra goodies, including a monthly women’s health e-newsletter, simple-to-follow advocacy alerts, and a Proud Member team badge to display on their Web site or blog.

Become a Fan

Midwifery supporters who want to learn more about Team Midwife before joining can cheer us on by liking Team Midwife on Facebook. They’ll receive news and updates in their news feed that make it easy to share the truth about midwives with their network of friends and family. It’s also a great way to connect with other fans of midwifery.

Special for Midwives
We’re making it easy for you to spread the word about Team Midwife. Print out our free 8.5 x 11 inch flyer to display in client waiting areas or rest rooms and download our smaller flyers that print 4 to a page and fit into new client packets.

We hope you’ll join us in cheering for Team Midwife! Midwives are welcome to join the team, but the most important ways to get involved are to “like” us on Facebook and print out our free flyers to share with your clients and friends.
