A.C.N.M. Foundation Scholarships and Awards

The following awards and scholarships are offered by the A.C.N.M. Foundation. Awards currently open have application dates. Please click on the links to review this year's application materials. All submissions are accepted electronically at fdn@acnm.org.

Awards

Sandy Woods Scholarship for Advanced Study - Applications due April 15, 2013
The A.C.N.M. Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of the Sandy Woods Scholarship for Advanced Study. CNMs/CMs of color who are enrolled in doctoral education may apply by sending a letter of application describing their program, current progress, and area of professional interest along with a CV and proof of enrollment to Jan Kriebs at jkriebs@fpi.umaryland.edu by April 15. The award will be presented at the ACNM 58^th Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN.

OnGoing Group 20th Century Midwife Student Interview Project and Awards - Applications due March 1, 2013
These three awards are given to student midwives who participate in the OnGoing Groupstudent project to meet and interview an elder midwife and record her story. Some educational programs plan to include this project as a part of the professional issues curriculum. After the interview, the student will write up the interview to be kept for historical purposes and also will write an essay about what she has learned and how this may influence her career.

Bonnie Westenberg Pedersen International Midwife Award will not be awarded in 2013 – contact the ACNM Foundation at fdn@acnm.org for information.

To honor the memory of Bonnie Westenberg Pedersen by providing an award to an international midwife to encourage her/him to follow Bonnie's path of leadership, vision and significant contributions to the profession of midwifery and international reproductive health, particularly in developing countries.

Dorothea M. Lang Pioneer Award – Nominations Due March 1, 2013
The Dorothea M. Lang Pioneer Award honors an exceptional CNM/CM who has been certified for ten years, has not been a recipient of the Hattie Hemschemeyer Award, and has demonstrated vision and leadership.

Louis M. Hellman Midwifery Partnership Award – Applications Due February 21, 2013
This award is presented jointly by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the A.C.N.M. Foundation, and the Midwifery Business Network. The award recognizes a physician who has been a champion/supporter of midwifery practice. Nominees must be a fellow or junior fellow of ACOG. The Hellman Award is presented at the ACOG Annual Meeting and announced at the ACNM Annual Meeting.

The awardee must have demonstrated:
1.  Excellence in clinical practice, education, administration and/or research focused on the health care of women
2.  Leadership in health care for women through the collaboration of physicians and midwives, and
3.  Advocacy for vulnerable and/or underserved women.

W. Newton Long Award - Applications Due March 1, 2013
This award is given to a midwife (CNM/CM) to fund projects which relate to the advancement of midwifery. The following types of activities may be eligible for this award: Advancement of midwifery clinical skills; advancement of midwifery through research and/or the dissemination of midwifery research; promotion of professional midwifery; presentations at medical or midwifery conferences; establishment of new midwifery practices/services; and/or study of different aspects of midwifery practice in the U.S. and abroad.

Varney Participant Award - Applications Due March 1, 2013
The Varney Participant Award enables student midwives to attend the ACNM Annual Meeting under the mentorship of an established leader in the field of midwifery, Mary C. Brucker, CNM, PhD, FACNM; Professor, Associate Dean and Graduate Program Director of the Baylor School of Nursing.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled as a student in good standing in an ACNMACME-accredited basic midwifery education program, have successfully completed one academic or clinical semester/quarter or clinical module, and be a current student member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

A.C.N.M. Foundation Community Grant Awards - Applications Due April 1, 2013
These small grants are intended to support community projects that are designed or created to promote excellence in health care for women, infants and families worldwide. This award is ideal for midwives caring for underserved populations, retired midwives, and community activists.

Excellence in Teaching Award - Applications Due April 1, 2013
The A.C.N.M. Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award honors one teacher in every ACNM pre-accredited/accredited education program each year. The Board of Trustees will confer the award to the candidate selected by the students in each program. One person may be selected from each program each year. The award honors excellence in teaching. Clinical Stars Award – Open applications
Affiliates and local groups of midwives can honor their own stars – midwives who have been in clinical practice for 25 or more years and are members of the ACNM. Contact the foundation at fdn@acnm.orgfor more information.

2013 A.C.N.M Leadership Development Award – Applications due August 1, 2013
The purpose of this award is to improve leadership skills in business management and marketing of midwifery practices. CNMs/CMs are eligible to apply. The award is a monetary grant to help cover the costs of attending the Midwifery Business Network (MBN) meeting.

Hazel Corbin/Childbirth Connection Grant for Evidence-Based Midwifery Care – Not available in 2013
The Hazel Corbin/Childbirth Connection Grant for Evidence-Based Midwifery Care honors the memory and leadership of the A.C.N.M Foundation’s first President, Hazel Corbin, RN, who was also a long-time general director of the Maternity Center Association (now Childbirth Connection) and one of ACNM's first honorary members. This exciting grant will support or augment outstanding projects that foster knowledge of the safety and/or effectiveness of midwifery practices for mothers and newborns and application of this knowledge, especially projects that reflect the highest international standards for evidence-based practice. High-quality applications from midwives and other professionals from a wide range of settings are welcome. Applicants must adhere to clearly described guidelines in the application.

The Jeanne Raisler Memorial Award – Applications due March 1, 2013

The Jeanne Raisler International Midwifery Award honors her commitment to midwifery and to international women’s health issues. The award is intended to encourage midwives to become involved in global projects, by helping to support an international experience or project that will benefit women in a developing country.

Applicants for the Raisler Award should be reasonably new to international health work as midwives. CNMs and CMs who are enrolled in an educational program related to international health may not apply for funding for travel or projects related to their educational program. Students who have not yet completed their basic midwifery program are eligible to apply in the year in which they will sit for the Certification examination.

Scholarships

Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships - Applications (Part 1Part 1, Part 2Part 2) Due March 1, 2013
The Foundation awards scholarships to support basic midwifery students’ education. The applicants are judged on academic and financial need criteria. Some scholarships require additional personal information or statements. Applicants should evaluate the options available, and may apply in more than one category.

Edith B. Wonnell Scholarship - Applications (Part 1Part 1, Part 2Part 2) Due March 1, 2013
This basic scholarship is given to a student midwife who will work in an out of hospital setting, either in a birth center or home birth practice. Applications are reviewed according to the guidelines for Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships, plus the personal statement.

Midwives of Color-Watson Basic Midwifery Student Scholarship - Applications (Part 1Part 1, Part 2Part 2) Due March 1, 2013
The Midwives of Color-Watson Scholarship is a Basic Midwifery Student Scholarship supported out of dedicated funds that support the educational careers of student midwives of color. Applications are reviewed according to guidelines for the Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships, using academic achievement and financial need to determine award winners.

Susan Stein Scholarship – Not available in 2013
The Susan Stein Scholarship Fund was established and inspired by Susan Stein. Passionate about helping people make choices and educating women, Susan was touched by the healthcare system at an early age watching her mother struggle with Breast Cancer. Through her lifelong and personal journey with cancer, midwifery became a framework for high quality, empowering care. To honor her experience, Susan set up a scholarship fund to support midwifery students who have been personally affected by breast cancer. Applications are reviewed according to the guidelines for the Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships, plus the personal statement.

A.C.N.M. Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Education (applications not currently being accepted)
The ACNM Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Education award is made to a midwife actively enrolled in doctoral or post-doctoral studies.

Deanne R. Williams Public Policy Fellowship (applications not currently being accepted)
This award supports the creation of a white paper that revisits and reframes the evidence collected over time that documents the safety, cost effectiveness and unique contributions of midwifery care as provided by CNMs and CMs.
