My moment that I discovered that women needed a choice.

When I was a night shift nurse in labor and delivery in 1990, I worked at a teaching hospital with Ob residents and medical students. Women would come into the hospital in active labor and wanted to walk and go natural but the residents would not let them because it was too risky. The residents told me that the baby might have a decal while the mom was up walking and if not on the monitor then no one would know it. So I started thinking if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there or hears it then who cares the woods are still there and nature still exists. Now, yes a baby is more important than a tree but if the baby has a decal and then is fine then does it matter. It is part of nature and Gods plan. So I continued to collect stories like this and experiences that made me believe that women should have a choice about the position that they labored in and be supported by their provider. We did not have midwives at this teaching hospital so when I left it for bother job I sought a position at a hospital that employed and utilized midwives and their expertise. I found the most awesome midwives by the name of Lisa, Jackie, and Ruby. I watched them assist women and help them with their birth options. I eventually applied to midwifery school and became a midwife. I am a practicing midwife today at North Fulton Hospital. I love assisting women with their choices and water births.
