Leadership Tools and Resources
ACNM is pleased to offer tools and resources to assist you in the role of Affiliate leader. If you need information about engaging members in your affiliate; using the affiliate portal; contacting the affiliate membership or just the leaders; setting up a website or using Go-To-Meeting, all of it can be found below.
We are always looks for ways and ideas to improve services to the affiliate leaders. If you have an idea or a question, please email [email protected].
It is everyone’s job to recruit members, as everyone benefits from more members and more resources. ACNM has developed an Affiliate Membership Toolkit to assist affiliate leaders in recruiting and retaining members. We hope with a dual effort by the national office and the affiliates, we will all be successful with increasing our membership.
All of the items in the toolkit are editable so each affiliate can include affiliate-specific information. The toolkit includes:
The Affiliate Membership Toolkit was first introduced during the October, 2014 Affiliate Connections webinar. Access that webinar, and all Affiliate Connections, here.
We are excited to announce a new membership brochure for affiliates to download and print. There are three different versions, and one version allows for the affiliate to include specific contact information. The brochures are set to print on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and are available for download.
This version allows for affiliate-specific to be added on the bottom of the brochure.
Strategic Planning is a process in which an organization sets priorities, focuses energy resources, and develops the goals of the organization. Strategic planning sets everyone in an organization moving in the same direction striving to achieve the Vision and Mission. Effective strategic planning articulates not only where an organization is going and the actions needed to make progress, but also how it will know if it is successful. This process is used to set the direction of the organization, but also to set legislative and advocacy goals.
ACNM has developed introductory guides to assist affiliate leaders strategy planning. Many affiliates are currently working strategically, but not formally with a ‘strategic plan’. These guides are useful to affiliates just beginning the process or affiliates that want to formalize the work already in action.
Holding a meeting of the affiliate is a great way to engage the membership. Meetings can be business in nature or centered around education. Either way, a lot of work goes into the planning and execution of the meeting. Below please find information about the 'ins and outs' of planning a meeting; the different roles for volunteers and some ideas that will hopefully take the stress out of meeting planning. If you have any tips to add, please contact Christy Levine at [email protected]
Are you communicating effectively with your affiliate members? It is crucial that affiliates maintain a regular flow of communication with their members, both to keep them in the loop with what is going on within the affiliate and to ensure that they feel included in the organization. Remember, many of these members were never chapter members before and affiliate membership is new to them. The ACNM Affiliate Portal provides affiliate officers with the up-to-date member information necessary to facilitate these communications.
Access the Affiliate Portal, where you can look up, download, and save data about your affiliate, by logging in to midwife.org at the top of the page using your username and password. Once you have successfully logged in, click "Edit My Profile." This takes you to a page that displays information about the affiliate. The link for the Affiliate Portal is along the right hand side of the page. Reports available to be run include:
Hint: To produce Export to CSV or Label reports that include all affiliate members do not make any selections in the Membership Category selection area. Only make selections in this area to exclude all unselected categories.
The affiliate portal allows
you to modify the reports generated to get the exact information you need.
To help you identify and connect with new members of your affiliate, we have added an Enrollment Date range report modifier. You can now select the type of report you would like to run, enter in a range of dates in the Enrollment Date boxes and select Create Report. The report generated will only be those members that are new to ACNM and new to your affiliates within the specified date range.
This report will give you the opportunity to reach out and welcome the new members to the affiliate, alert them to upcoming events and tell them of the different ways they can become involved in the affiliate. Reaching out to the members, especially new members, is the first step in engaging them.
Change of Address
Many of our affiliates use the membership reports generated from the affiliate portal to map which legislative district the member lives in to help forward legislation. This can be extremely time-consuming. We have added a column to the CSV report that now includes the date the address was modified. As a leader, you can sort the spreadsheet and see only those that have moved. It is our hopes that this will make mapping legislative districts with members much easier!
We updated the membership category list so you can run different reports which can include specific member types. Want to send something to just the student members in your affiliate? Simply click the type of report you want to run, then under Membership Category, select “student” and the report generated will contain only students. Want to run a list of ALL members in your affiliate? You can either leave the Membership Category list blank, or hold down the CTRL key and select them all. Either way will generate the information you are looking for.
ACNM is dedicated to providing affiliates with services that enhance their ability to connect and communicate with members to build an active and engaged affiliate in their jurisdiction. ACNM is pleased to offer two e-Midwife discussion list-serves for each ACNM affiliate.
All Member List-serve
The first list-serve is made up of all current affiliate members with e-mail addresses listed in their ACNM membership record. To send a message to the affiliate discussion list-serve, a list member simply needs to send an e-mail addressed to the list from the e-mail account that is on file in their ACNM membership record. The e-mail address to send messages to the all members discussion list for your affiliate is your state’s postal abbreviation @emidwife.org.
Affiliate Officers List-serve
The second discussion list is an affiliate officer discussion list-serve. This list-serve is populated with all the officers currently listed for the affiliate and again, this list will update daily to pick up any changes to the affiliates officers. The e-mail address for the officer discussion list simply adds “–officers” to the address of the all members discussion list.
Please click on the link to find additional information about accessing the list-serves and general guidelines for use. e-Midwife List-serve
Having a website can help you communicate with the affiliate members and the public. This will help with engagement and involvement of the members in the affiliate. ACNM is pleased to offer free web hosting for affiliate websites (also known as “micro-sites”).
To learn more about the micro-sites, please click here to read about the features and training available through ACNM or check out our template affiliate micro-site. There are many options available when using the micro-sites, including color schemes and the menu of content, so each micro-site will be individual.
Branding the Affiliate
It is important that all of the communications to members have the same look and feel so that members can easily recognize that it is from the affiliate. If your affiliate does not have a logo, ACNM has one developed that incorporates the ACNM logo and is available to all affiliates. If you are interested in using the ACNM affiliate logo, please complete the Affiliate Logo Use Agreement.
Affiliates may choose to have an presence on Social Media in addition to a website. This is another tool to help communicate with your members and the general public about the Affiliate and midwifery.
ACNM has developed "Social Media Basics" to introduce affiliates to Social Media and help you get started. If you have any questions surrounding Social Media, please contact the ACNM Media Relations, Social Media and Marketing Specialist Damaris Hay at [email protected].
Today's technology offers affiliates the opportunity for affiliate leaders and/or members to connect over long distances via teleconference or webinar. ACNM can offer assistance with holding a webinar though Go-to-Meeting. Complete the Go-to-Meeting webinar request form and return to Christy Levine at [email protected]. If you don't need full webinar capabilities and a teleconference will suffice, you can register for a free conference line from a provider such as Freeconferencall.com.
For additional information on how your affiliate can hold effective virtual meetings at no cost, please visit ACNM's Teleconference & Webinar Best Practices.
