CERTIFIED NURSE-MIDWIVES IN OHIO
Nurse-Midwifery in Ohio
- Ohio Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) have been practicing
since 1970, when Community Hospital in Springfield opened their
midwifery service.
- Ohio CNMs practice in a variety of settings including
private practices, hospitals, university medical centers, birth
centers, home birth practices, family planning clinics, schools of
nursing, state and local health departments, and an Air Force base.
Statistics
- There are over 300 CNMs in Ohio who hold a Certificate of Authority to practice, as issued by the state Board of Nursing.
- There are over 90 nurse-midwifery practice sites in Ohio.
- In 2002, CNMs delivered 9,510 babies which is 6.4% of the babies delivered in Ohio for that year.
Education
- There are currently 43 accredited education programs offering post-baccalaureate
certificate and masters degree programs in nurse-midwifery and midwifery.
A number of these programs have distance learning education options.
- Ohio's graduate nurse-midwifery programs are located at Ohio State University in Columbus,
at the University of Cincinnati and at Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland.
Practice and Reimbursement Issues
- Nurse-midwifery practice is governed by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
- Nurse-midwives are required to have a written Standard Care Arrangement with their collaborating physicians.
- Nurse-midwives who hold a masters degree and meet other qualifications may apply for prescriptive privileges.
- Nurse-midwives must maintain current certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board.
- A bill is pending in the Ohio state legislature which would
permit Advanced Practice Nurses to admit their own patients to the
hospital.
