It is a
privilege to care for and bear witness to women in some of the most vulnerable
moments of their lives. We are formed by their stories and the global truths
within them. As we advocate for and serve one another, we are changing the
global story. We change the story through our collective work and individual
journeys. We change the story through our thoughts and words and deeds and
presence.This will be a time to remember how our individual and communal
work changes women, families, and the world. It will be a time to remember our
inheritance as healers and the universal lessons we bear in our hearts. We will
honor that our work can be difficult and requires dedication, and we will
celebrate the work midwives have accomplished as we inspire one another for the
work still ahead.
Becca Stevens is founder of Magdalene & Thistle Farms, a community and social enterprise that stands with women recovering from trafficking, prostitution, addiction, and life on the streets. She is the author of 8 books and has been featured on NPR, PBS, CNN, The Oprah Magazine, Huffington Post, Southern Living, Christian Century, and Victoria Magazine.
Most recently, Stevens was named by the White House as one of 15 "Champions of Change." She was named the 2011 Social Entrepreneur of the Year
in Nashville, TN, and has received awards from the Frist Foundation and the
Academy of Women of Achievement.
Stevens was named "Nashvillian of the Year" and
"Tennessean of the Year" by the Nashville
Scene and The Tennessean
respectively. In 2010, she became the youngest and first female recipient of
The University of the South's "Distinguished Alumnus" award. Her
latest books are Funeral for a Stranger
and a walking Bible study series, The
Path of Peace, Justice, and Love.
Stevens is an Episcopal priest serving as Chaplain at St
Augustine's at Vanderbilt University. She lives in Nashville with her husband,
Grammy-winning songwriter Marcus Hummon, and their 3 sons. Her new book Snake Oil: The Art of Healing and
