The Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME)* has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a programmatic accrediting agency for nurse-midwifery education programs since 1982. In 1994, ACME approved criteria to accredit direct-entry midwifery education programs; the first program was preaccredited in April 1996. In 2006 ACME was recognized as an institutional accreditor.

for a position on the Board of Commissioners. Qualifications include: CNM/CM with
Active or Associate membership in ACNM; five years of midwifery practice or education
experience, at least two of which are within the previous five years; familiarity with the
accreditation process; and availability for meetings and conference calls. Commissioners
serve for a minimum of 3 years with opportunity for reappointment to a maximum of 10
years.
ACME adheres to nondiscrimination in that an individual will receive consideration and
fair treatment based on merit and capability without regard to race, color, religion,
gender, national origin, sexual preference, age or disability. Preference will be given to
candidates with earned doctorates and current or recent program director experience.
Choice of candidate also may reflect an intention to have representation of geographic
and practice diversity on the board. Interested persons should send a letter of interest, a
