ACNM Virtual Lobby Week 2014
About Lobby Week
How do you make a difference in the lives of women and families in your community? Use your voice to deliver your story to Capitol Hill during ACNM Virtual Lobby Week May 12-16. On the heels of International Day of the Midwife and Mother’s Day, ACNM and the Government Affairs Committee (GAC) are once again asking midwives to call their legislators during this special season of honoring midwives and the women we serve. With just 3-5 minutes out of your week, you can join us in raising the collective refrain: midwives are skilled healthcare providers who need your support on maternity issues that benefit both moms and their babies.
This year, we are supporting H.R. 4385, the "Improving Access to Maternity Care Act of 2014." This bill will create a maternity care health professional shortage area designation for areas of the country or population groups experiencing a shortage of full scope maternity care providers and facilities.
This matters because the shortage area designation can be used to funnel resources to those areas where they are most needed. Notably, the National Health Service Corps' loan repayment and scholarship programs will help fund the education of health professionals who agree to practice in shortage areas after their education is complete.
ACNM has set up a page with specific information about the legislation.
How To Participate
Participating in Virtual Lobby Week is simple. All you need is internet access. You can complete these 2 easy steps in about 3-5 minutes whenever it is convenient for you—on your lunch break or even while your toddler naps.
1. Open the ACNM Action Alert e-mail you receive on May 12 and click on "Take Action."
2. If you don't have the Action Alert, then visit ACNM's Action Center and click on the arrow in the "Actions" box.
We would suggest you also follow up your email with a phone call. To find your Representative's phone number, plug your zip code into the "Find Officials" box in the ACNM Action Center. Ask to speak to the legislative assistant who handles health care. Ask them to support H.R. 4385. During your conversation, you can use talking points from ACNM to explain why we support the bill.
Watch this video to see the Chair of ACNM's Government Affairs Committee call her own legislator.
