Military Branch, Rank, and Unit: Major, US Army, Nurse Corps Duty Station: Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft Lewis, WA No deployments Hometown: I grew up in Maryland but home of record for the Army is Copperas Cove, Texas. Personal Profile: I have been in the military for 14 years. I have been stationed at Fort Sam Houston, TX; Fort Eustis, VA; Fort Hood, TX; University of Maryland; Tripler Army Medical Center, HI; and Fort Lewis, WA. After graduating from the University of Maryland, I had my first assignment as a midwife in Hawaii. They have a wonderful midwifery service and truly practice the midwifery model of care. We didn't put IVs in our patients, and we even had Jacuzzi tubs, birthing balls and squat bars. I became Chief of the Nurse-Midwifery Service while there. We took the service from 3 CNMs to 6 CNMs who provided 24 hour in-house coverage and taught residents. This is the largest midwifery service on the island of Oahu. We did many creative things to allow deployed soldiers to remain in contact with their spouses. One of the most interesting experiences I had there was attending a birth while the deployed father who was on the telephone started crying as the baby was being born. I am currently stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. I am the Chief of the Nurse-Midwifery Service and again am involved in teaching residents and developing a wonderful midwifery service. back to Midwives in Uniform page |
