This year
has been busy for ACNM in the area of quality improvement (QI) initiatives. This
year, we have had more members than ever before submitting data to the Benchmarking Project, we have fully participated in the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal
Health (AIM) project in the Council on Patient Safety in Women's Health Care, and have successfully engaged 17
hospitals (5 new, 12 continuing) from
across the country in the second year of the Reducing Primary Cesareans (RPC)
learning collaborative. Hospitals
participating last year reduced their NTSV rates by as much as 18%. We are
excited to recruit hospitals for a third RPC learning collaborative for 2018.
The RPC is part
of the ACNM Healthy Birth InitiativeTM (HBI).
The Healthy Birth InitiativeTM (HBI) is a long-term Initiative led by ACNM with representatives from leading
maternity care organizations. HBI focuses on preserving normalcy by promoting
evidence-based practices that promote healthy physiologic birth. The Healthy Birth InitiativeTM
works to encourage a consistent approach to birth practices and is focused on
reducing practices that are not evidence based.
As you may know, the most common reasons for
cesareans in low-risk women are related to dysfunctional labor and
"non-reassuring" fetal heart rate tracings. These issues account for about 60%
of first cesareans in this population. The
Healthy Birth Initiative created 3 evidence-based "change bundles" that are
consistent with national evidence and practice. These are:
Intermittent Auscultation
- Promoting Spontaneous Labor Progress
- Promoting Comfort in Labor
teams are supported to: choose one of these 3 bundles, gather data to measure
their progress and benchmark against other hospitals, receive individualized
coaching, and participate in webinars focused on implementing change, quality
improvement tools, and physiologic birth.
The 2017 RPC project is partially funded by Transforming Birth Fund, which is part of the New Hampshire Charitable
Foundation. The A.C.N.M. Foundation,
Inc. is administering the funds and additional resources have been provided by
ACNM.
