Databases, Search Engines and Libraries

Intute: Health & Life Sciences (formerly Nursing, Midwifery, & Allied Health Professions
A search engine that locates quality Internet resources is found at this site. The site has tutorials for using the Internet to locate information regarding healthcare, and lists employment opportunities in the UK.

PubMed - National Library of Medicine
This is a database that contains citations to health- and medicine-related articles. The database can be searched using simple or advanced search techniques. Citation information and abstracts for the articles are provided in the search results.

Cochrane Collaboration
This database contains reviews on various health-related topics. Authors summarize and critique clinical research trials. This link will take you directly a search engine for the Cochrane database: http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/index.htm

National Electronic Library for Health

This site is part of the Midwives Information and Resource Center (MIDIRS). This site has links to news articles, organizations, events and a reference database. The reference database includes an assortment of articles related to pregnancy and some women's health topics. The database can be accessed by clicking on Ref. Database.

University of Southern Carolina School of Medicine Library: Evidence-based Medicine Resources
This site contains links to many web sites containing databases with evidence-based resources. Many of these links are free and do not require membership or passwords. This site also includes clinical guidelines, clinical trials, evidence-based tutorials, information on critical appraisal, specialty web sites and glossaries.

HealthLinks: University of Washington Library
This site provides links to several sites with information on women's health. It also has a link to PubMed.

University of South Australia Library
This is the website of the library at University of South Australia. Although some of the databases are accessible only to students and faculty, there is a wealth of resources located at this site. There is an introduction on how to use electronic resources and search the web. The site includes links to databases, ejournals and links to various organizations. Some of the links are to web pages with information, while others link to sites with references and articles. Some of the topics for the links include pregnancy, breastfeeding, midwifery, practitioners/researchers in midwifery, complementary therapies, domestic violence, family planning, grief and loss, neonatology, parenting and more.

WHO Reproductive Health Library
This site provides information on an electronic review journal that is issued by the UNDP/UNFPA/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction of the World Health Organization Department of Reproductive Health and Research. Evidence-based health care information on reproductive health is made available to clinicians and other health workers, especially in developing countries. The WHO Reproductive Health Library is currently available only as a Microsoft program on a CD. It is free to clinicians in developing countries and for a small fee for clinicians in developed countries. Clink on www.update-software.com/rhl to obtain information about obtaining the WHO Reproductive Health Library. The website also includes information on a variety of topics such as adolescent reproductive health, cervical cancer, family planning issues, HIV/Aids, infertility, older women, refugee reproductive health, reproductive tract infections and safe motherhood. For each topic, there is an overview, bibliography, program examples, links and a Spanish edition.

This website is geared towards patients and consumers. It has links to leaflets on various topics, self-help and support groups, directory of UK websites, books and diagrams of body parts and diseases.

Clinical Guidelines and Trials

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
This site contains links to evidence-based reports and the National Guideline Clearing House. In addition, the site has links to research highlights in women's health, research findings on a variety of topics and information for patients and consumers.

CMA Infobase: Clinical practice guidelines
These guidelines are produced or endorsed in Canada by a national, provincial/territorial or regional medical or health organization, professional society, government agency or expert panel. This database contains guidelines that outline the research and make recommendations for treatment.

National Institute for Clinical Excellence
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence was set up as a Special Health Authority for England and Wales. It is housed in the National Health Service (NHS), and its role is to provide patients, health professionals and the public with authoritative, robust and reliable guidance on current best practice. This site has guidelines on a variety of topics.

Current Controlled Trials
The site has a search engine, which can be used to search for controlled trials. Information, such as the title, description, primary researcher and contact information is provided. The website also lists of trials funded by various organizations.
