Presented by Victor LaCerva, MD

In this dynamic interactive seminar, you will give yourself the gift of learning new strategies for managing stress and improving your conflict resolution and communication skills. Many health care workers, because of the nature of their service work, do not take care of themselves appropriately. They often work long hours, forget to take breaks, interact poorly with coworkers, and spread their stress around the living room when they get home. Healthy work environments encourage individuals to pay attention to self-care and their own physical and emotional wellbeing, which results in more content, creative and productive staff. Our time together will explore:
* Tools for balancing the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of ourselves.
* Twelve ways to immediately reduce stress in the moment.
* Emotional fluency, the anatomy of anger and resolving conflict.
* What infants can teach us about state and energy management.
* The nature of the change process and how to effectively embody internal shifts and create new habits.
Come relax, laugh, and learn some new tools to dance with stress!

Increasing access to care that promotes and supports physiologic birth is a major national strategy for achieving high-quality, high-value maternity care. The American College of Nurse Midwives has launched a multidisciplinary/multi-stakeholder initiative to promote education, resources and policies that strategically promote physiologic birth on a national scale. One of the outcomes of this initiative is the development of a health care provider focused physiologic birth tool kit www.BirthTOOLS.org. Birth TOOLS (tools to optimize outcomes of labor safely) is a web based tool kit that includes a menu of change targeting key areas of practice that can enhance women's opportunities to experience normal physiologic childbirth. It is a one stop shopping site which houses multiple components including policies, education programs, exemplar protocols and audit tools; everything needed to put the goal of promoting physiologic birth into action! The focus of this presentation is to highlight the value of this resource for use in hospital settings, including how it can be incorporated into maternity care quality improvement and safety efforts. Following an introduction to the site a panel of midwifery leaders will then speak to their success, challenges and recommendations related to changing maternity care practices on the unit and system level to support physiologic birth.

When the learning stops and the snoozing starts: development of a guideline for SNM on-duty time

Be a part of making history! The Educational Policy Section of the Division of Education of the ACNM is working to develop a recommendation regarding on-duty time vs. on-call time for midwifery students. Currently, a national recommendation does not exist for on-duty time limits for midwifery students as it does for medical residents and other professions. It is the goal of the Ed Policy Section to devise a recommendation that maintains student safety, yet is conducive to sufficient clinical experience and is agreeable to preceptors. The purpose of this session at Midwifery Works! is to open the dialogue. We seek your input in the development of this recommendation. Format will be short panel presentation followed by brainstorming in small groups.
