Lobby Day 2015

ACNM welcomes all members to participate in its federal Lobby Day activities.  During the 60th Annual Meeting & Exhibition, you can visit the Government Affairs (GAC)/Midwives-Political Action Committee (PAC) booth (Prince George's Pre-Function B&C, Level 1) to see if a meeting has been arranged with your two senators and one representative.

ACNM's Lobby Day is our opportunity to meet with members of Congress and their staffs on issues of concern for midwives and your clients.  This year, we will be meeting to discuss the need to identify areas of the country experiencing shortages of maternal care providers and the importance of support for midwifery education to ensure an adequate supply of maternal care providers.

Where can I get materials that I need to lobby?

ACNM has prepared materials for use during lobby day.  ACNM and the GAC will put together one folder for every legislator that contains our talking points.  Materials for participants and legislators include:

During ACNM's meeting, Jesse Bushman, ACNM's Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs will be discussing these materials, and will provides some additional background information.  ACNM's Federal Representative, Patrick Cooney and ACNM member Debbie Jessup, a ten year veteran Capitol Hill staffer will provide insight on how to effectively advocate for our issues.

Don't forget to bring business dress to the annual meeting so that you can be attired appropriately during your congressional visits.

Speaking to your legislators about midwifery and advocating for the health and well-being of women and babies in your area is the best way to put our issues at the top of their legislative agendas, and you are the best person to do it!  It is up to ACNM members to educate legislators about the critical role midwives play in the delivery of quality health care services and the pivotal role they will play in the future.  Join other midwives to make the collective voice of midwifery as loud as possible on Capitol Hill.

CEUs will be available for both the preparatory sessions (1 contact hour/0.1 CEUs) and for the Lobby Day visits to the Hill (2 contact hours/0.2 CEUs).

Lobby Day itself will take place on Tuesday, June 30.  A preparatory session will occur at two times, to accommodate varying schedules.

How do I get to and from Capitol Hill?

We are making arrangements for chartered buses from the hotel to Capitol Hill and back again.  Travel time is approximately 30 minutes each way.  Please note that we have had to contract early with the bus company based on our best estimate of participation.  If many people opt to participate last minute, alternative transportation may need to be arranged.  We have been told that taxi service is readily available and will cost about $20 each way.  If you have pre-registered for Lobby Day, be sure to pick up a sticker at the GAC/Midwives-PAC booth near registration so that your seat on the bus is reserved.

How do I sign up for Lobby Day if I have not done so already?

You may still meet with legislators on Lobby Day.  The Government Affairs Committee is coordinating scheduling of appointments with senators and representatives and you can join in these pre-scheduled appointments.  You do not need to set up your own appointment.  Check in at the GAC/Midwives-PAC booth near the ACNM Registration Desk to find out when appointments with your legislators are scheduled.

Please join us for post-lobbying fun at the 5th Annual Midwives-PAC Rally!

Ever year at the Annual Meeting, the Midwives-PAC holds an auction to raise funds for use in our federal advocacy efforts.  Silent auction items include art, books, jewelry, wine and clothing.  The live auction will feature a variety of unique items ranging from tea with the President of ACNM to vacation packages.  For those who would like to window shop ahead of time a list of items available during the silent and live auctions (with photos) is available.  the ACNM Midwives-PAC is your voice in Congress.  Our mission is to advance ACNM's federal policy agenda by facilitating the creation of relationships between legislators and midwives and by supporting legislators who have a proven record on issues that matter to ACNM.  The Rally and auctions are the most significant fundraisers for the Midwives-PAC each year.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at Registration.  See you Tuesday, June 30th, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.!

What if I am not attending the annual meeting, or can't fit lobby day into my schedule?

You can still make your voice heard.  ACNM has set up an Action Alert through our grassroots action center to permit you to contact your legislators and express support for the Improving Access to Maternity Care Act of 2015.  Your voice will bolster the in-person messages being delivered by your colleagues who are able to visit Capitol Hill and will go a long way to reinforcing what they are sharing with their legislators.  So Take Action today, by clicking on the big red button!
