Entering the ACNM Age of Affiliates: What You Need to Know
In January 2011, the ACNM affiliate structure will be visible to all ACNM members. Here’s a preview of what to expect: All ACNM members will also be members of the ACNM affiliate in their state or jurisdiction. To join ACNM or to renew your membership, you will need to pay your national dues and the dues set by your affiliate. Members of the military can choose to join the Uniformed Services Affiliate or the affiliate in the jurisdiction where they reside. Likewise, national membership in ACNM is required in order to belong to an ACNM affiliate. In some states there will still be local chapters, which must be recognized by the state affiliate. Chapters will not be part of the ACNM structure without an approved affiliate.
As of January, initial membership renewal invoices sent from the national office will include both national and affiliate dues. Your dues cycle for affiliate and national memberships will be the same; you can pay dues annually or in monthly installments. Each month, a list of all renewals and new members will be reported to each affiliate; all dues collected by ACNM on behalf of the affiliate will be paid to the affiliate. Information about your ACNM affiliate and who is leading the effort in your state can be found at www.midwife.org/aff_devsup.cfm.
Affiliates were created by the 2008 bylaws, which were written and reviewed by a large and diverse committee of more than 100 members and approved overwhelmingly by the ACNM members. Affiliates were not mandated by the ACNM Board of Directors or the national office.
As of January 2011, affiliates will be the contact point for ACNM at the state level. ACNM will offer resources to help affiliates connect and support all ACNM members within their state or jurisdiction. The national office and Board of Directors understand that this transition is a major change. Working together, we believe this change will make ACNM a stronger, more effective organization for you and the women and families you serve. If you have any questions or concerns, visit our affiliate Web page at www.midwife.org/aff_devsup.cfm or contact your regional representative or the national office staff at memb@acnm.org.
