Start the Conversation: How to Talk to Patients about Preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs)

April 27, 2016, 2:00PM EDT

Join The Arc and Marilyn Pierce-Bulger, CNM, ANP, for this free webinar. Although FASDs are entirely preventable if women do not drink alcohol while pregnant, survey data shows that up to 25% of women continue to drink during pregnancy. That is why asking the right questions about alcohol consumption during preconception and pregnancy is vital, and can help prevent miscarriage, stillbirth, and a range of physical, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities for the baby that can last a lifetime.

This webinar will discuss steps that midwives can take to identify and counsel women at risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancies. Several evidence-based screening tools and intervention strategies including motivational interviewing have been shown to be effective with pregnant women, but are not widely used. Learn more about how you can potentially save a child from the lifelong challenges caused by FASDs by starting an honest conversation.
