ACNM Supports Sen. Stabenow at Press Conference for ACA

(From left) Tina Johnson, ACNM Director of Professional Practice & Health Policy, and Lorrie Kaplan, ACNM CEO, join several female Senators, pregnant women, new moms and their babies, and obstetricians-gynecologists at a press conference September 25th in the U.S. Capitol led by Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) (at podium), the Congressional champion of maternity care services for women.  The Senator called the press conference to demonstrate widespread support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its provisions to support maternity care and other essential services for millions of women, and to oppose any attempt to shut down the government if the ACA is not defunded or repealed.  In addition to Stabenow, the group of participating Democratic Senators included Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Patty Murray of Washington, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota. The new moms, most of whom received care from midwives, told personal stories of their need for the ACA.  “ACNM was pleased to be a part of this important event,” Kaplan said.  “Together, we delivered an important message about how the ACA impacts very basic issues for women in the area of maternity care.  We hope the rest of the Congress will listen so full implementation of the act will continue and women and their families will receive all of its essential benefits.”
