The purpose of the ACNM Archives Committee is to document the history of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and its affiliate organizations. The Committee is not charged with documenting the history of midwifery, not even midwifery in the US-a daunting task! However, through documentation of the history of the ACNM, its former chapters, and now its affiliates, a large portion of the history of midwifery in the US is recorded and accessible to scholars and lovers of history. The ACNM?s history is documented through the archiving of original documents from ACNM governance, such as Board of Director?s meeting minutes and speeches given by officers at ACNM functions. Most archived materials are held at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Artifacts from the history of the ACNM are also housed at the NLM. An example of an artifact would be an ACNM seal that is no longer in use. The ACNM national office strives to archive materials regularly so that artifacts are preserved from accidental damage and accessible to the membership and scholars.
