The Accreditation Commission
for Midwifery Education (ACME), is recognized by
the U.S. Department of Education (under 'Health Care') as a programmatic accrediting
agency for midwifery education programs since 1982. The U.S. Department of
Education grants the following scope of recognition to ACME: "the
accreditation and preaccreditation of basic certificate, basic graduate
nurse-midwifery, direct entry midwifery, and pre-certification nurse-midwifery
education programs, including those programs that offer distance
ACME is seeking to expand its scope to
include the accreditation and preaccreditation of the midwifery practice
doctorate for midwives who are national certified.
In accordance with ACME
policies and procedures, the commission provides a comment period seeking
written comment from our constituents and stakeholders on a proposed
new set of criteria for practice doctoral programs in midwifery for
students who are already nationally certified midwives. The new criteria are
Criteria for Programmatic Preaccreditation of the
Midwifery Practice Doctorate for Midwives who are Nationally Certified with
Instructions for Elaboration and Documentation
Criteria for Programmatic Accreditation of the Midwifery Practice
Doctorate for Midwives who are Nationally Certified with Instructions for
Elaboration and Documentation
Third party comments must be received in writing
and in English. The comment period will be open from March 10, 2017 to
April 30, 2017. To assist us in gathering your comments, please use the

Procedures Manual, and the U.S.
Department of Educationís requirements, ACME is seeking written third-party
comment concerning the qualifications for accreditation of the following listed
midwifery programs. These programs will be reviewed for renewal of accreditation at the February 2018 ACME Board of Review (BOR) meeting. Upon
request, comments will be considered confidential.
Your comments will be
included with other program materials undergoing review next February. In all
instances, your comments must directly relate to the continuing accreditation
of a program and the ACME Criteria for Programmatic Accreditation,
(December 2009, Revised June 2013, April 2015). This document may be found at www.midwife.org/Accreditation
